With a subdiameter lap, the lap needs to go and spend a lot of its time near
the edge to bring that edge down.
I'll note that when working glass like this, there is no putting glass onto
the surface, only removal of the glass in particular areas preferentially.
With a hill at the 80% zone, that is where you need to remove the material
to bring the slope of the outer edge to where the rest of the surface needs
it to be.
