I think the bond formed with silicone between glass
and another surface is a perfect vacuum.
Silicone is a liquid until cured. While it is liquid,
it displaces air. The air stays out when the stuff is
solidified, thus it's an excellent vacuum, and because
of this property that it sucks as an adhesive - a bond
is formed.
I would think that smooth surfaces would form a better
bond, because the silicone will hold fewer air bubbles
in its suction zone.
So the stuff sucks. Metal clips on the outside of a
mirror are even worse. They block light.
