I'd just start working on the other side and not worry about the chip.  That
1/4" isn't a significant depth and the size, while fairly large, isn't a
significant part of the glass.  Since the trend now is to support the glass
at the 50% radius rather than the older 70% radius, you won't be getting
close to that ding with the mirror support.
The worst is that you don't have a second surface to start working on if you
get a ding on the mirror surface anymore.
