Kevin,
1. The WB kits come with 2 pyrex blanks, not one blank and one plate glass
tool.  This actually doesn't matter much to the discussion.

2. Should he grind away using one of the blanks as a tool, he'll either
have to figure out how to support that blank on it's convex surface, or
he'll have to grind down the convex surface and make it concave.  Either
option seems harder than just making a tile tool, but that's just my
opinion.  From start to finish it took me only 20 minutes to make a tile
tool (but, then again, I had the materials lying around).

Maybe a little JB weld or bondo would be a good filler material to flatten
out a convex surface.  Hmmm...
