ATM building a finder

Last summer there was a thread about building a finder scope with
inexpensive parts. Well, I put one together using the objective mentioned
below and a 25mm eyepiece. The image in it is terrible. Even in the
daytime, the outer 1/2 to 1/3 is blurry. At night stars are a total mess.
Does anyone have suggestions?
Is it necessary to stop down the objective? How much would you suggest?
Might it help if I flip the lens to put the other face outward?
Other ideas appreciated!
