I guess that I read Tom's post incorrectly.  From the Schroeder article, I
read that I'm looking for that little part of the mirror where the dimming
tends to be even over a small distance.  I'd kind of suspect that this would
be a lot easier to do with a mask of the two halves of the zone of interest.
I'd suspect that I'd do it with a single mask per zone ala the Couder mask
design divided into severa masks rather than the single mask with all of the
zones in it that most do.  The search on each side is to find the point at
which the zone dims rather than slides one way or the other.
