Re: ATM Gugolz 64 Pitch
Pat,
Remove the pitch from the lap, (wrap it and stick it in the freezer), then
make a new harder lap. You can use the pitch / pitch mix you have now by
boiling the pitch while heating it. Five to ten minutes of a spitting
smoking boil (there is no such thing as rolling boil with pitch) should do.
You can check for hardness by pulling some out, letting it cool, then bend,
break, thumb nail, or what ever, to compare with what you had before. If
it gets too hard, add a few drops (that's all it takes) of turpentine.
Your f/ is long so you would like a hard pitch. Maybe not rock hard pitch,
but hard. Hard, really hard laps need to be hot pressed to conform them.
Personally I don't like 64, its too soft. I perfer 73 and I often harden
it. Then again I've only been working f/ridiculously long lately.
According to my hyper-nerd radio thermometer it's 64F down stairs right now.
I like cement tools (heavy), and I always seal them with epoxy to avoid
edge crumbling.
You likely don't need to go back to 5u. Most often, what is polished in
can be polished out
Good luck
