Dan, you miss the action that happens with any particular number of support
points. The more supports on the mirror, the less the deflection of the
surface due to gravity than with less support points.
The idea here is to get the deflection under a certain level. Of course,
there is the stupid limit where you have thousands of support points and
none of them are supporting that much of the mirror and they may tend to not
go to the correct supporting position due to static friction.
