On the burned paper that attached the tiles together, it is probable that
the back of the tiles didn't adhere to the stone and they may have started
moving up and down in the stone.
FWIW, I just looked at a tool that I've been using to flatten the flint
glass for my 12" lens and it is worn down so far that I am now grinding on
the stuff that was used to hold the tiles together, meaning that the tiles
are probably about 1/8" thick or so.  Still no tiles that have lifted or
look like they may be lifting.
