It is true that a 3 vane spider will give 6 spikes, but the TOTAL amount of 
diffracted light will be less that that in the 4 spikes of a 4-vane spider.  
A 3 vane spider will actually give far better low-contrast resolution, such 
as on planets, that a 4 vane
