Re: ATM Plywood for a Dobsonian
Bill,
My local supplier carries Finnish Birch, Baltic Birch, and Appleply
plywoods. They are all cabinet-quality plywoods used by various
manufacturers to make dobsonian telescopes. According to my supplier,
Finnish Birch plywood is the highest quality and costs the most. Next in
quality is Appleply, and then Baltic Birch. The look of Finnish Birch and
Baltic Birch will reflect the wood used in its construction - Birch.
Appleply has little to do with apples. The outer skin is Maple. The greatest
difference among these plywoods is that Appleply and Baltic Birch use
interior-grade glues to bind the layers. Finnish Birch plywood uses a
water-resistant marine-grade glue to bind its layers.
Check your Yellow Pages for local suppliers of hardwoods and specialty
plywoods. Your typical lumber yards and hardware stores won't carry it. If
you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, I can tell you where to buy it.
