For this small of a scope, I wouldn't be afraid of using 3" PVC pipe. PVC is
easy to work and it won't dent like aluminum. In larger sizes, it is too
heavy when you get it thick enough to not deform when pointing different
directions. A 3" piece about 2 feet long isn't going to have that problem.
I built a 3" in a 4" aluminum pipe. After you get so small, the diagonal
price doesn't go down any more. If I remember correctly, the 1/2" diagonal I
used cost as much as the rest of the scope. A whole whopping $15.
