The biggest thing with a scope of that diameter is the crush resistance of
the tube.  By the time that the tube is thick enough for the support of the
scope elements, it may not be strong enough to be packed about yet.  You may
also want to look at Hollowood wood tubes for the scope as they are
available in a lot of quality hardwoods for the exteriors.  The stuff is a
tube of plywood (~1/8" thick)  and is available in a lot of different sizes.
