I'd make the tool with tiles as they will do a nice job.  You have the hole
hogged out so you aren't going to be removing that much more material unlike
those that do the hogging with the tiles.  Start your tile grinding with the
same 80 grit that you have been hogging out with and, as soon as the tile is
mated, go to the next grit.  Don't forget to watch your sag as you grind as
it's going to be changing as you go along.
