One way to avoid problems is to not make the upper end of your scope so
light weight that a change of eyepiece impacts the balance greatly. My
17.5-in dob is balanced so that it is neutral with a 13mm Nagler, and the
tube weighs enough on the top end so that the lever arm is about 5 to 1.
The scope does not loose position with a 20mm Nagler, or no eyepiece,
despite the fact that it uses roller bearings and a friction roller
altitude drive, part of Mel Barter's excellent AltAz system. -Jay-
