Hi Bob
 I've not set one up myself but I'd think that it might work better
with about a .0005". It doesn't really have to be wire. I'm told that
others have even used dental floss to get fine strands. Also,
as was mentioned, you can use a slit but you need a way to
adjust them parallel. This makes a moving source a good
idea since it is then attached to the wire.
