Dental Stone will hold together just fine in water for about anything less
than month long times (I haven't tried it for longer periods so I can't
qualify for those longer times).
The intention of a hot iron is to remove the pitch cleanly rather than the
cold chipping of the stuff with a knife or other such tool. Towards this
end, just using the iron to dig a hole and not removing the material doesn't
actually do what is necessary towards cutting grooves into the lap.
