When I'm grinding on a barrel, I just sidewalk around the barrel to the left
and turn the glass with my hands as I grind (same thing whether on a barrel
or on a bench) with the top going to the right (which makes the direction go
even faster around)  with the sort of letting the glass rotate as I push
with the left hand more than the right and then pull more with the right
hand than the left.  With this, I get about 10 degrees or so per stroke.
When working on a bench, I work my way from one side of the tool to the
other, stop and pickup the tool and move back to the starting side of the
tool, making about 1/3 of a turn.
