The local astronomy club used to power it's remote observatory with a
automobile style, 175 amp hour, 12 volt, deep cycle battery designed for
electric outboard motors. It could supply 12+ amps all of a Winter's night
without the slightest problem. It ran a small inverter and some misc. 12
volt stuff. Recharging took about 6 hours from a high efficiency 115 volt
powered charger. After 4 years this battery was still going strong with
twice a month usage.

Here's a link to some deep cycle battery info. These are Panasonic models,
but many manufacturers make virtually identical "industry standard" types.
These sealed lead-acid-gel types are very robust and can take at least 100
to 200 deep cycles. You find the 17 amp hour and 40 amp hour types in many
portable telescope power packs.

Search "lead acid"
