Could I suggest plastics. I have had wonderful success with
acrylic sheet. I also find that concrete works in a lot
more applications than just a mount or counterweights. You
could for instance use concrete to make molds and pour
aluminum, etc. I have worked aluminum on a wood lathe and common
drill presses as well. Finally making a simple metal lathe is
not impossible. I have managed this as well using little more
than a washer machine motor, a 35 mm shaft, belts/pulleys and
a a metric chuck. I couldn't help noticing that while new
metal lathes are expensive, around here at least, the bits,
etc that you put in the chucks are quite inexpensive, in general.
On the other hand, a simple used metal lathe suitable for the
projects indicated in the book for the CB245 can be had pretty
cheap. I found one not so long ago for about 150 USD, which for
a hobby like this, is realistic. I am sure I could have turned
right around and sold it for the same price after such a
project.
