Malcolm:
Brass brushes are common in the aluminum airplane business for removing
corrosion. Steel brushes leave tiny pieces of steel imbeded in the
aluminum, causing future dissimilar metal corrosion. Hence the brass
brushes. Stainless steel brushes are available and I have one of those,
too. However, I would trust neither not to "shed" particles. If you want
to give the pitch lap more "bite" and increase the polishing action, I
recommend pressing a sheet of wedding veil material into the lap (and
then removing it, of course!). This leaves micro-facets on the lap and
makes it polish faster, as well as allowing the lap to make better
contact. I do it routinely.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from poor
judgment. Steve.
