Just in case anyone is actually following this thread, I think I finally
found the answer!  I replaced the grease in my journal bearings with
graphite!  Whereas there was an obvious feel of overtorque and springing
into position previously, with the graphite on the bearings, there is no
sign of it.  And the graphite doesn't squeeze out of the bearing at
rest.
