Before your post, I had already come to the same conclusion. I've
scrapped the swivel in favor of a simpler approach. The south end of
the RA Axis has a bolt head that holds the final drive wheel. I used
the Dremel to create a small round notch in the center of that bolt
head. I then ground the end of a 1/4" threaded rod to a point that fits
in the notch. A small wood frame attached to the drive mechanism allows
me to use the threaded rod to adjust the position to support the RA
Axis, and now this single point is the thrust bearing surface. Just
finished it last night. Waiting for the clouds and my schedule to clear
so I can test it. Cost=$0.00. Built from scrap in the basement from
other failed attempts!
I'm going to get pictures of this Kludge-o-scope up yet!
