"Methyl chloride" is just that, methyl chloride, MeCl or CH3Cl. ("Chloro-
methane" to use the accepted notation--for which I understand the need, but
I prefer the older names.) Chloroform is trichloromethane, CHCl3.
Methylene chloride is CH2Cl2.
Methyl chloride is a gas at room temperature so I doubt that it's possible
to clean anything with it :) Methylene chloride is not especially toxic
or dangerous; for a long time it was used for decaffeination of coffee,
being a particularly good solvent for caffeine. But, well, it's one of
those nasssssty chlorinated organics. God knows what ineffective
substitute they use these days.
