There are several types of lubricants that will reduce friction, but
expecting them to make up for what's lacking in a fitting just won't be
very effective. I'm not saying a thread bearing can't work; it just
wouldn't be my choice for an easy mount. Again, the wider the diameter
of the bearing, the less play there'll be. If your heart is set on
an equatorial head, there _are_ simple designs that don't require
heavy machining availible. I think one or two may be described
in the List's vast archives.

You can make an easy equatorial platform upon which the dob is placed.
Again, see the archives.

I'm not currently a member, but the Kansas City club has between
200-300 members if I recall and I think there is on/off activity
in instrument making. Maybe Bob Allen could comment further. At any
rate, you're welcome to drop by my place.
