Re: ATM 32 INCH GREEN PLATE GLASS
>...a pottery kiln, size 60 x 60 x 80 inch.
Kees,
The issue isn't melting, but rather annealing. Most large green glass
isn't all that well annealed. When it is, such glass will make a fine
mirror. Though allowing this substrate to equlibrate between figuring
sessions gets old fast.
Ideally, a two inch thick piece of glass should spend about 2000 hours
annealing, that is, a hour a mill. That's a lot of kiln time (three
months) and a lot of fuel. This is what has diswaded me from persuing
this, for now. Large glass kilns are generally run constantly, as taking
them down can harm the kiln. Often such a kiln will have an annealing
section. If you have access to this and the powers that be don't mind you
hogging the room, go for it, just make sure you don't mix dissimilar glass
in your melt. And, you might want to start small first.
