The rubbery mat material of which Jeff speaks is truly handy. You can get it
at Target, where it is sold as drawer lining, in a variety of designer
colors--I like the sage green, myself. You can also get it, usually in a
funky beige, at futon stores where it is used to keep futons from sliding
off their frames.
I use it to line the bottoms of trays, tubes, boxes, and drawers I use for
my optical junk and also on the work bench surface--it absorbs the impact of
dropped glass and keeps things from rolling away. It may even help with
static. I've got my fingers crossed it will even improve my sex life.
