I've heard that this is used for supporting mirrors during grinding, for
supporting mirrors in a simple cell (perhaps for testing), for use as a
backscratcher, and as a covering for cement around the observatory in an
attempt to reduce the heat problems. I have used:
For supporting mirrors during grinding: A rubbery/foamlike mat that is sold
as a means of keeping throw rugs from sliding around when walked on.
For supporting mirrors in a cell: Never done that sort of cell, but I
suspect the material described above would do the job.
For use as a backscratcher: Mrs. Medkeff. (Hey, get your own! :-)
For a thermal-friendly cement covering around observatories: A product
called Kool-Deck apparently cannot be beat.
