You might check out http://members.gotnet.net/bald/eric.htm to see a 24"
glass disk cut out of a 42" glass disk.  It's only 1/4" thick or so, but it
worked without any disasters.  It only took an afternoon, too.  Test for
tempered glass beforehand.
