I don't remember it taking anywhere near 17 hrs. to download
the new JDK and Netbeans.  The downloader said it would take
8 hrs. a few minutes after startup.  I peaked 6-1/2 later when
it said it was... 50% done -- Only 16 hrs to go!  Hence the
allusion in the subject.
