Re: [ATM] Masking Tape Goo (was Varathane)
Specifically: Scotch (3M) #2836 pressure sensitive tape
#2836 is quite common throughout the planet, so I'll comment
on this one. Adhesive on tape is readily washed away with warm
water. When attached to a surface, this adhesive is highly
sensitive to moisture plus refrigeration, and often just falls
right off. This is cross-linked rubber resin adhesive. 3M
claims #2836 has excellent solvent resistance, but offers no
quantitative proof. I have yet to see it resist water. I'd
love to bet my biggy bank against 3M's on this point anytime,
anywhere. Try for yourself and draw your own conclusion.
Anyway, 3M openly points out that this adhesive is temperature
unstable and can be removed by merely varying temperature, and
this is something I do successfully in my lab routinely.
There is a latex saturated paper backing material that can
get baked onto the target surface. When this gets stuck, you
will need more aggressive solvent than water alone or together
with soap or small temperature variations. This is probably where
mineral spirits based products come in.
The history of what has happened to your tape will make a
difference. Here is some contact info for the people that
make #2836 and know the chemistry.
