I am sorry, but this is for amatuers, or folks looking for the quick and easy way of finishing wood. PolyShades by MinWax are good for touch-ups on nicks and scratches, but they will never compare to the depth and beauty that a real stain and finish will bring to wood. Since the don't penetrate, they don't produce the translucence you see in a fine finish. They are little more than clear, colored paints.

As for your common polyurethanes, any of them should go over an oil (i.e. solvent) stain without a problem. I've been doing this for 30+ years without a mishap. As was mentioned earlier, there was probably something wrong with Richard's stain or it may have been a bit too cool to apply it and give it time to dry properly. I have stained many pieces on Saturday morning (I never stain pieces in the evening) and put a poly coat on Sunday....not a problem.
