Re: [ATM] Using what we build.

Hi Dominic:

Yes, comets come in all sizes and colors. Probably none as spectacular as
Comet Hyakutake in 1996. It left a bright blue trail over 90° of the sky and
it was hard to capture it all. Hale-Bopp fit nicely in a standard 50mm/35mm
film format. Nasa/JPL have my photo taken over the 200" telescope. In this
case the comet Holmes has not developed a tail. It does have an interesting
coma that can be seen divided into two shells. At this point it probably
would not help to photograph it in a wider field and at the moment 200mm is
the shortest focal length that I can use with the DSI CCD. It is cloudy at
the moment but I plan a close up with a 6" f:6 at a community star party
Friday if not sooner. More exposure starts to obscure the core. In fact I
have been trying to find comparable photos and they all seem to obcure the
core structure so there are trade-offs but I believe being able to see the
core and shell structure has the greater educational value.I do plan to
adapt an 80mm f:1.8 lens to the CCD but unless this comet developes a tail,
it will have to wait as I am working on this handicapped accessible
observatory. Hope you have a fine warm fire for those long Swedish Nights.

Best,
Rick
