For my masters thesis I had to glue optical fibers to flat waveguide 
structures on silicon, and used polyurethane because of it's refractive 
index. The solvent I used as a thinner was amyl-acetate, which smells like 
candy. The various alcohol types of solvent (methanol, ethanol, 
iso-propanol) also worked, but not as well.
