Then there's also paint stripper for the job.
One thing to remember is that you can always apply more stain to
cover those areas that get sanded away.  Oil based stain  like
the old minwax stuff, readilly can be applied to freshly sanded
areas to gain the same color as the rest of the stained areas
without overdoing the previously stained areas IF the overcoated
areas havbe been removed.  You'll see where the topcoat wasn't
removed properly when you go to apply the stain again as the
stain won't take in those areas.
My recommendation is to strip, sand and restain the wood and
follow the instructions of keeping to one system for the whole
way through the finishing process.
Finally, urathanes are like epoxies in that the temp you put them
oooon at is one of the determining factors in how fast they
cure )not dry)!
