Hi Richard,
Is your Varathane, by chance, made by MinWax?
Last year I bought some nude kitchen chairs and MinWax
polyurethane. The 6 chairs occupied my garage for a
full week waiting for the first coat of MinWax "stuff"
to dry. They never did. I will NEVER by MinWax
urethane again.
I stripped them down and bought "Varathane" brand
polyurethane and put 3 coats on without any subsequent
issues.
Just my two bits.
