Splatter is!
I guress that the idea is to spin the grinding tool in a manner
so that the splatter is in a controlled direction.  Thus it ends
up that horizontal  spinning tools are the best as you just have
to put a big tub around the work and go from there.,  I had a
shop tour of an optical shop ione time when I went to Stellafane
from one of the guys that worked in a shop in north central Mass.
and the grinder had about two inches of grit off of the wheell
and glass arounbd the tub that it was in.   Lots of glass was
ground there!  The tub was about siz feet in diameter.
