[ATM] The Public Terrestrial Telescope Projet: My Ultimate Goal
Hi again Folks:
To clarify what I'm trying to do, in addition to making a nice public
telescope for the top of one of our mountains here in Moreno Valley, CA, I'm
trying to create an 80 mm. outdoor, weatherproof, vandal-resistant and
theft-resistant scope that anyone with a basic machine shop can duplicate
with readily available materials for less than $500. If I'm successful, when
I'm finished, I'll publish the plans as an eBook.
Outdoor public telescopes are expensive. If you Google the words, COIN
OPERATED TELESCOPES, you'll find several companies that make or sell either
binoculars or telescopes in this general size range. Most of them sell for
$3,500 to $4,500 with the single exception being a pair of Chinese
binoculars that, unless the posted information I saw was wrong, looked like
they had a suggested price of around $1,500.
A durable, less-than-$500 scope that ATMs or hiking clubs could make,
themselves, seems to me like a good idea that might catch on.
