Mels technique with the scratching  can be extended to what could be 
called "selective scratching" to correct zones.  Wherever there is a 
high zone on the mirror, lightly scratch the corresponding zone on the 
lap.  This will give a somewhat more aggressive polishing action at that 
zone.
