[ATM] Best locations for 4-Pt. Wiffletree edge support PLS.
Thanks everyone for their posts.
Mel, I just finished reading atmList?s related threads for almost the last
6 year, particularly your posts. Given your vast experience and
acknowledged expertise, I would certainly accept your conclusions about
which authors? theories you personally are comfortable with.
Dale, I respect the collective knowledge of atmList members here and think
it is probably the best atm resource on the web. It?s members have always
included guys on the leading edge of telescope design and construction.
While some may push the limits and ?go boldly?? they?re also grounded in the
sound engineering. And, just as important ? actual experience such as Andy
Saulietis and his sling, etc designs for even bigger scopes.
Was surprised that my thread question lead to so much discussion and that
edge control for thin amateur mirrors is still a ?frontier? and hasn?t yet
been the subject of 3D modeling or analysis, like back support has. Too
bad that the latest solutions adopted by high-budget observatory solutions
using very complex active systems don?t translate well for us atms.
Thanks for the links Dale, altho I already like the expertise here. I
agree with you about the edge support working against the edge CG, adjusted
because of the sagitta. And that the edge support should move in
conjunction with the cell.
Jan, if the edge mounts move with the live cell frame, would not there be
very little movement. The only movement might be because of a different
coefficient of expansion between the mirror material and the cell
components, and any change in orientation because of mechanical flexure of
the cell frame.
Nils, you ask about the project. We may use shoulder bolts as the pivot
pins for the arms. It will be treaded perpendicular to a sturdy riser
welded to the ?live? or moveable cell frame. Btw, there should be enough
inside clearance in the mirror box for future mods.
Bob
