Re: [ATM] Pitch Substitute for very fast mirrors

They used pitch laps, of course. However, we've come
a long way in synthetic materials since the discovery
that pitch is a good polishing lap. I'll let everyone
know if this material is the New Pitch of the 21st
century once I get the mirror test results done.

Right now, I'm using a normal stroke TOT, tool
undersized (8") to bring it to a spherical shape. I'm
getting a good feel from RTV silicone. It feels like
it's working. Silicone is cheap and widely available
- the prime motivator in my decision to abandon pitch.
I don't need to put silicone on a stove to make it
into a tool, the second motivator. The third is that
my wife really doesn't like the smell of pitch (I
think it smells good). Everyone knows the benefits of
a happy spouse.

If it doesn't work, I will go back to pitch. I still
have a little left, and if I don't have enough, I'll
tap a few of these yellow pines nearby and boil it
down.
