Couldn't be simpler. The inverter converts single phase to three
phase. It varies the voltage and frequency of the three phase to
control the motor speed accoring to the position of a
potentiometer or small DC control voltage input. 3 phase motors
are smaller, cheaper and more efficient than single phase
motors, and a lot quieter and more effecient than DC motors. No
brushes to wear out either.
