Re: [ATM] DC Motor for grinding machine question

Hi,

I have used DC Speed control on several machines, for many years. It is
great to be able to vary the speed by simply turning a dial.

Depending on the size glass you are working, 1/3 to 1/2 horse with a
reduction drive may be enough. My current machine uses a 3/4 horse and a
60 to 1 reduction. Even at lowest RPM you can't stop the turntable. All have
used 90VDC motors, as this is a simple setup from 110 AC. I use
commercial controllers that I have picked up at a local junk yard that
sometimes gets them. A reasonably priced new unit is made by DART, and
can be purchased through various industrial suppliers, or ebay. Make sure
you get a control set for the size motor you are going to use.

One other note, a Permanent Magnet motor is preferred, as the others are
much louder.
