I like that ball joint idea. Ball joints are available in a wide range
of sizes. Little ones are used, for example in model airplane control
linkages. Many, or perhaps most, commercial ball joints have close to
zero slop. Perhaps one could also figure a way to incorporate a ball
joint (maybe it is two ball joints) at one of the two adjustable
corners. Than would constrain in plane motion as well as axial.
Compliant hinges look good for this as well. One could tolerate higher
bending stiffness in a compliant hinge for collimation than in one for
flotation support. If it takes a bit more torque to adjust collimation,
that usually wouldn't be a problem.
