Generally the machine that polishes flats is a large cast iron
disk with pitch on the outer part of the diameter (the center
isn't used on these machines) and there is usually a corral estup
so thta the disk of glass can rotate as it desires. There is
usually at least another corral for the flattening disk which is
another piece of glass much larger so that it keeps the whole
pitch surface flat and the machine goes around.
If you're planning on doing 6" flats, I'd suggest a disk about
36" in diameter so that only the outer 1/3 of the disk really has
the pitch on it.
