Yes it is. The area, if not ground, will reflect light to an out
of focus positon and you will never get rid of the halo around
the stars.
If you are getting grit slopping over the edge of the tool, I'd
suggest that you don't put as much grit on the tool and also
pickup that grit from the table and resuse it. Generally, you
won't get any scratches on the glass by doing this with that
coarse of a grit.
I'll note that you should have gotten that pit out before going
down through the gtits.
