Re: [ATM] 4" objective !

For a mount you will want to make something like the rocker and base
plate assembly for a Dobsonian telescope. The only real differences will
be that the base plate is the tripod, and instead of gravity (although
this would work with some care on your part during use) holding the
scope onto the rocker box you will want to capture the altitude
bearings. A simple split wooden bearing, with two bolts at the optical
tubes balance point to act as the pivot axels would work well. With the
split bearing you can adjust the friction, and lock it onto a target.

If you need more info, or a drawing I'll try to do something simple that
should get the idea across, but my computer drawing skills are just
about non existent.

BTW check out the Meade website, they might have some pictures up that
might be of some help to you, I don't know they address of hand but
Google should be a big help.

Hope this helps you some.

Subject: Re: [ATM] 4" objective !

update,

got the 4" objective yesterday evening. tested it and
calculated the focal length to be exactly 1
meter(1000mm).i was so excited that i spent the whole
night making the telescope using 5" diameter pvc pipe.
i used 20mm eyepiece with focuser(thanks charles) and
front surface mirror for the diagnol. after a while
everything got fixed but i got blisters while making
the holes in pvc pipe because i was using a screw
driver :(.
first thing i did was took it outside at about 2:30am
in the morning without a mount and looked at the moon.
first time in my life i looked at the moon so close!.
when i pointed it to mars it just looked like a black
dot with red color ring outside it :(. looking at
saturn, i didnt see the rings but red ring or black
dot was not seen.

1st question is, what can i see at 50X using 4"
objective. sorry for this primitive question but i am
in uncharted waters now...

2nd question is,now i am trying to convert a camera
tripod(4 feet height) into mount for the
telescope.google search turned out nothing. so any
tips/pointers on converting the tripod into a mount?
