a decade back, I came up with my own solution to this question. I used a
'differential screw' arrangement. Imagine a 6mm (1/4 inch) screw. Now reduce the
diameter of half of it to 3mm (1/8 in). Then cut a 3mm thread on the thinner
part. This screw passes through captive nuts in the fixed and movable parts of
the mirror cell. The screw allows adjustment due to the difference in thread
pitch. I used shake-proof nuts (with nylon inserts).
You could get a similar effect using a combination of left- and right-handed
threads on the same screw.
