The thickness of a lens set is a function of the glasses used in
the design and so forth.  In the end, poor glass selection (there
are thousands of different glasses in the optical engineer's
supply of glass), a thick lens set may not be as good as another
lens set that is a fair bit thinner.
I'll also note that you have to find out what the specs of the
design are as there are a lot of different desires with a lens to
focus the light to the image plane.
