I like the page you have on this.  It seems to me that exposing film on the 
caustic test would be no more protected from temperature anomolies than 
visual testing.  When I caustic test my lateral measurements are usually 
repeatable to the 0.0001" range.  The film would be a good record though. 
Have you tried this with ccd rather than film?
